New Delhi- The Rajya Sabha on Monday elected Janata Dal (United) MP Haribangsh Narayan Singh as vice-chairman of the upper house by voice vote.

"I declare that Harivansh Jit has been elected as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha," said Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu. Voice vote was held for the election of Rajya Sabha Vice-Chairman on the first day of the monsoon session due to COVID-19 pandemic.

RJD member Manoj Jha was the candidate from the opposition. Opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad Jha also proposed to elect a deputy chairman. The motion was later moved by Congress leader Anand Sharma.
Harivansh's term as Rajya Sabha member is coming to an end in 2020. The election of this deputy chairman was necessary today.
