Media reported chaotic views of collapsed roofs, destroyed buildings and cars in the affected area.

"My city was completely destroyed. We have a child who died. It cannot be explained. It's like Hiroshima," Mayor Petrinja Darinko Dumbovic told reporters.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, President Zoran Milanovic and other ministers visited the city on the same day.

"We are sorry. This is a tragedy. The army is here and the police, civil defense, fire and rescue services are arriving," Plenković told reporters in Petrinja.

An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck an area near the epicenter on Monday morning, but no one was killed.

Tuesday's earthquake was felt across the country.
