At least 12 people were killed and six injured when a train was pulled onto a bus at a crossing in Bangladesh on Saturday, media reported.
The accident occurred in Joypurhat district when the Uttara Express train connected to Rajshahi crashed into a passenger bus at the Puranapoil level junction en route from Parbatipur, reports the Daily Star. The train drags the bus about half a kilometer on the railroad tracks, the Dhaka Tribune said. Buses leave from Joypurhat to Punchby.
Initial investigations revealed that the crossing was open and the person on duty was absent, which caused the accident, said AKM Alamgir Jahan, Head of Joypurat Sadar Police.

Deputy Commissioner Joypurhat Shariful Islam said the bodies of 10 people were found on the spot. Eight people were rescued, two of whom died of wounds at the government hospital in Bogura. Six of the injured were treated at Joypurhat Sadar Hospital. All of the victims were bus passengers, reported bdnews24.com. Such flat crossing accidents are common in Bangladesh, with poor safety standards, unmanned level crossing and negligence of manned level crossing workers being key factors, the Daily Star reported, citing firefighters.
Bangladesh Railways has set up a three-person commission to investigate the incident.
