Britain's Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, was hospitalized overnight as a "precautionary measure", Buckingham Palace said on Wednesday. The 99-year-old was rushed to King Edward VII Private Hospital late Tuesday, Palace said, adding it was "a precautionary measure taken on the advice of HRH doctors" after the prince felt unwell.

The Duke of Edinburgh "is expected to stay in hospital for several days to be monitored and rested," the statement said. The 94-year-old Prince and Queen follow the social distancing rules at Windsor Castle because their age puts them at risk of contracting COVID-19.

The couple received their first dose of vaccine in January, the palace said in rare public commentary on the royal couple's personal health concerns. Prince Philip resigned from civil service in 2017 at the age of 96 after being hospitalized for two days with an infection. He then had surgery on the hip in 2018.

In January 2019, he appeared unharmed after his car was involved in a car accident that injured two people near the Monarch Sandringham estate in eastern England. Philip stayed at King Edward Hospital for four nights in December 2019, where he was treated for a condition he called "pre-existing". Although he was released on Christmas Eve that year, he has not been seen publicly since.

The last stay at the hospital renewed Philip's health problems ahead of his 100th birthday in June this year.
