 MELBOURNE: Heavy rains lashed Australia's east coast on Saturday, prompting multiple evacuation orders and appeals to authorities in Sydney, Australia, from potentially deadly flash floods in Australia.


  Most of the coast of the state of New South Wales (NSW), home to about a third of Australia's population of about 25 million people, has seen record-breaking patterns of March rainfall with heavy rains forecast to disrupt.

 "It's not just the amount of total rainfall, it's how fast and intensely the rainfall has actually decreased," Agata Imeilska, a meteorologist with the Meteorological Department, told a television briefing.

  

    "So today (we) are really calling on the nation out there that this day is for those strong defensive measures to stay home and stay safe."

   

     Television footage showed flooding across the state, submerged roads and people roaming the streets with kayaks, flooding windows and rivers at the same height.  Video posted on social media and broadcast on local TV showed pictures of the entire house being swept away in floodwaters in the center of the state.

    

      Since Friday night, NSW Emergency Services has responded to more than 800 calls, including several hundred to avoid flooding.



 The Meteorological Bureau reports floods in Australia that heavy rainfall of up to 70 kilometers per hour (43 miles) and winds of more than 90 kilometers per hour could cause deadly flash floods in Austria.


  Emileska said the Greater Sydney region will receive about 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain this weekend and the blue mountains below will see water levels rise to 200-200 millimeters.

 

   Sydney's Waragamba Dam, a major water supply source for the city that will overflow on Saturday and meet the river's flow, could cause potential flooding across western Sydney, meteorologists said.

    A $ 3.5 million (2. 2.7 million) Golden Slipper at Sydney's Rosehill Racecourse has been suspended for a week after the Australian 2021 floods caused dangerous turf races, the first since 1963.
