Three UN peacekeepers seriously injured in a rocket attack in Mali . Mali has been fighting a brutal jihadist uprising since 2012, when Islamist fighters first appeared during an uprising by ethnic Tuareg separatists in the north.



 At a military base in the conflict-ridden state of Northern Sahel, local and UN officials said.


 Olivier Salgado, spokesman for the UN-MINUSMA mission in Mali, said the attack took place at a base in Tessalit in the north


 where Malian soldiers, UN peacekeepers and French troops live. Three peacekeepers were "seriously injured" in the attack, he added. A Tessalite tribal leader, who refused to be named, said the camp was bombed with missiles that hit the barracks. 


Mali has been fighting a brutal jihadist uprising since 2012, when Islamist fighters first appeared during an uprising in Chad.


 Tuareg separatists in the north. France intervened to quell the uprising, but the jihadists dispersed and regrouped. In 2015 they led their campaign to central Mali and then to neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso.



 The 13,000-strong MINUSMA was founded in 2013 and has suffered one of the highest mortality rates of any mission in the history of UN peacekeeping.


More than 130 of its employees have died as a result of hostile acts, including six this year. According to UN statistics, around 230 people have died since the mission began.
