HONG KONG  - Prominent pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong became sentenced to extra jail on Thursday for collaborating in an unauthorised vigil to commemorate the crackdown on Tiananmen Square in Hong Kong , where people attended in 1989 commemorate the anniversary of Beijing's destruction of the Chinese democratic movement. 

She defied the authorities and went to Victoria Park to light candles and sing songs. Police present at the vigil warned protesters that they might be breaking the law, but did not make arrests that same day.

 Attended an unauthorised meeting and could have been imprisoned for a maximum of five years. Twenty other people are charged with T Wong, who rose to fame as a student activist and was the face of pro-democracy protests in 2014. 

He is already in jail after being convicted of illegal gathering in other protests. He was sentenced to 10 months in prison.Councilors Lester Shum, Janelle Leung and Tiffany Yuen were sentenced to between four and six months' imprisonment for the Tiananmen vigil. Wong was also one of 47 activists indicted under the city's comprehensive national security law for participating in the authorities' unofficial primaries last year. 

After months of protests against the government in 2019, they cracked down on dissent in Hong Kong. The criteria for the elections have changed and many defenders of democracy have been jailed. "We are very disappointed that our courts have not respected our rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression," said Chow Hang-tung. Vice President of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Democratic Patriotic Movements in China, which organized the annual Tiananmen Vigil.

 Our authorities continue to emphasize that no one has more freedom than others, but it is not that we are not looking for more freedom than others, we are looking for our rights, which are guaranteed by our Constitution, the Basic Law and the Bill of Rights, ”said he said. 

The Basic Law is Hong Kong's mini constitution and promises civil liberties not allowed on the mainland. Democracy activists say these freedoms were practically wiped out in the recent crackdown.
