Salman Abedi's brother has been sentenced to at least 55 years in prison for his role in the Manchester Arena bombings.

Justice Baker Hashem Abedi was sentenced to life imprisonment in each of the 22 cases in which he was convicted.

He told the Old Bailey, "It must be clearly understood that the accused was sentenced to a minimum of 55 years in prison. He can never be released," he told the Old Bailey.

Twenty-two people were killed in the Salman Abedi bombing in May 2017 because the Ariana Grande concert was crowded.

He died in the attack, and hundreds more were injured.

In March, his brother Hashem was convicted of 22 murders, attempted murder and potentially life-threatening explosion.

He helped his brother buy, store and transport materials for the bombing, the court heard.  Uses several phones, vehicles and addresses to prepare for the attack.

Hashem was arrested hours later on his way to Libya a month before the bombing and was extradited to Britain last summer, telling police he wanted to cooperate.

The family testified in the Old Bailey on Wednesday, as Mr Justice Baker began sentencing indigenous Islamic State-inspired jihadists.

Family members of the victims told of their devastating loss, their grief and being separated by the actions of the brother.

Survivors of the attack feel guilty for fleeing their lives without letting others know, and the worst thoughts immediately arise when they see people wearing such backpacks on public transport.

Despite being brought to the building from Belmarsh Prison, Hashem, 23, has refused to appear in court again.

Earlier, he fired his legal team and effectively withdrew from the murder trial.

The judge said he was powerless to force Hashem into the dock.

The 22 people killed were: off-duty police officer Ellen McIver, 43, Safi Roussos, eight, Sorrell Lekkowski, 14, Ellid McLeod, 14, Nell Jones, 14, Olivia Campbell-Hardy, 15, Megan Harley, 15.  Georgina Calendar, 18, Chloe Rutherford, 17, Liam Curry, 19, Courtney Boyle, 19, Philip Tron, 32, John Atkinson, 28, Martin Hate, 29, Kelly Brewster, 32, Angelica Klis, 39, USA Klis, 42,  Michelle Kiss (45), Allison Howe (44), Lisa Liz (43), Wendy Fowell (50) and Jane Towdale (55).

A public investigation into the attack is set to begin next month.
