The effects of the typhoon
More than 20,000 homes were left without electricity (Okinawa Electricity Department).
By noon, Typhoon Mayasak had swept through the area around Okinawa toward U.S. military bases, but warnings about strong high winds that could have caused homes to collapse continued. There was a risk of extremely high tides.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency had earlier said it would hit Kyushu, Japan's main southern island, after Mayasak, but its trajectory was sporadic but strong. Nevertheless, it can cause strong winds and rain.
The storm hit South Korea on Thursday. Last week, a hurricane hit the Korean Peninsula, causing extensive damage to both Koreas.
The meteorological agency said Maysak was blowing at a maximum speed of 180 kilometers per hour (112 miles) at its center at midnight.
The southern islands of Japan are prone to mudslides and floods during the typhoon season.
