A 7.5-magnitude earthquake near Alaska's Sand Point triggered a tsunami, Scott Langley of the National Tsunami Warning Center said Monday afternoon.

  The tsunami produced two waves, each 130 centimeters (4 feet, 3 inches) high, Langley said.  However, observers on the coast said the waves at higher tides were 1.5 feet (45.7 cm) and 2 feet (61 cm) high.


  He said the center had a 500-mile area of ​​port observation along the Alaska coastline.


  A tsunami alert was issued for parts of Alaska and Hawaii after Monday night's quake.  Canceled Monday night, according to tweets from the National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (NWS PTWC).


  Langley said the region of Alaska that had previously been the subject of warnings and advice was "quite remote."


  "There is no risk of a tsunami in North America, the United States and other parts of the Canadian Pacific," the center said.


  The epicenter was reported below the Aleutian Peninsula in the southwestern part of the state at a depth of less than 60 miles from Sand Point.

  Oysterback said residents of the city would take refuge in high open spaces away from the coast as they waited as a tsunami alert.


  "We hope another wave will arrive in about half an hour," Osterbach noted.  "We're right on the fault line. That's kind of normal."


  Janet Piniones Novels moved her family from Kodak Island to the summit of Pillar Mountain when a tsunami alert rang on Monday.  He said he has lived in the town of Kodiak since 2014 and the tsunami warning is the sixth time it has been issued.


   The quake shook Cold Bay about 90 miles west of Sand Point.



  Residents of Homer were ordered to evacuate and were later seen driving on higher ground.


  Several aftershocks were felt, including a 5.9 magnitude one and a 5.8 magnitude earthquake within an hour.
