The World Health Organization (WHO) said in a statement that a team of 10 international scientists would visit China next month to investigate the source of the Covid-19. They will visit the city of Uhan.
China has welcomed the independent investigation, although the WHO has been in talks for several months to enter the city.
The source of the corona virus is a market in the city. From where it is thought to be available when selling the animal.
However, there has been particular tension with the United States over the source.
President Donald Trump's administration has accused China of trying to cover up the initial outbreak.
A biologist from the group told the Associated Press news agency that the WHU was trying to prevent future outbreaks. Never trying to complain.
"It's not really about finding a guilty country," said Fabian Lindertz of the Robert Koch Institute.
"Trying to understand what happened and then based on the information we can try to reduce the risk in the future."
Dr Lindertz said the goal was to "find out when the virus started and where it originated in Uhan".
The mission was expected to last four or five weeks, he said
In the early days of the virus it was identified in a so-called "wet market" in Uhan and it was suggested that it was here that it spread from animal to human.
But experts now believe it was probably widened.
Chinese media reports recently suggested that the Covid-19 could have started outside China as well.
But analysts say the reports are unfounded, and the epidemic reflects concerns within Beijing's leadership about the damage to the country's international reputation from the epidemic.
