Moscow :On Tuesday, Moscow and Washington exchanged notes on extending the original arms control agreement.  Donald Trump has expressed interest in increasing the arms reduction treaty with Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden welcomed the move by telephone.

On the same day, Putin introduced a bill to expand the State Duma (lower house of parliament).

On Wednesday, the bill was approved by the Russian parliament

The expansion of this agreement will benefit Russia's national interests.  It will be possible to preserve the transparency and predictability of the Moscow-Washington strategic relationship, to be useful in maintaining global strategic stability in the world arena, contributing to the international situation and the process of nuclear disarmament, the Kremlin said.

In response to the development, a State Department spokesman told Russia's TAS news agency: "There are still steps that need to be finalized. But we are hopeful that this expansion, which will clearly help our national security, will be finalized before the deadline.
