A team of international experts investigating the origin of the Covid-19 has disproved this theory, but the source of the virus is still under speculation.

Peter Ben Mbarek, head of the World Health Organization's (WHO) mission, said the Chinese city of Wuhan was "highly likely" to spread the virus from a lab.

He said more needs to be done to identify the source of the virus.

The comments came at the end of a global WHO-China mission.

Wuhan in China's western Hubei province is the first place in the world where the virus was detected. Since then, more than 106 million cases and 2.3 million deaths have been reported worldwide.

Dr Mbarek told a news conference that the investigation   had found new information but that the picture of the outbreak had not changed dramatically.

Experts believe that the virus may have originated in animals before it spread to humans, but they are not sure how.

Dr Mbarek said the identification of the source of the Covid-19 showed a "natural reservoir" of bats, but that was unlikely to happen in Uhan's case.

Experts said there was no indication that the virus had been transmitted to Wuhan before the first official case was recorded there in December 2019.

Liang Wanyan, an expert with the Chinese Health Commission, said the Kovid-19 could have been in another area before it was identified in Wuhan.
