India abstained from voting in the UN resolution against Sri Lanka.

   On Tuesday, March 23, India was among 14 countries not interested in voting in the UN Human Rights Council, which brought a resolution against Sri Lanka over allegations of war crimes against Tamils.

  

  However, 22 of the 47 members voted in favor, after which the resolution was adopted. The resolution, entitled "Reconciliation, Accountability and Promotion of Human Rights in Sri Lanka", was adopted.  The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights made the proposal following a report released in January.

 

  The report states that the island nation is on a "worrying path towards recurrence of serious human rights violations".

 

  Sri Lanka has described the draft result as "undesirable" and "unreasonable".  In this regard, Sri Lanka has stated that it has violated the relevant articles of the UN Charter.

 

  Pre-vote statement

 

   India stated in a statement before the vote that its approach to human rights in Sri Lanka was based on "two basic considerations".

  

  “India's support for Sri Lankan Tamils ​​for equality, justice, dignity and peace.  The other is ensuring the unity, stability and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka.  ”

 

  The statement added: "The Sri Lankan government supports the call of the international community to implement its commitment to deviate from political authority by holding elections before the first Provincial Council elections and to ensure consensus among all provincial councils."  ”

  "At the same time, we believe that the work of the OHCHR should be in line with the mandate issued by the relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly."

 

  The real form

   The Indian government raised the proposal by pressuring the Sri Lankan administration to hand over the previously canceled Eastern Container Terminal project, and the country has internal pressure to support the proposal on the issue of election-based Tamil Nadu.

  

  India also believes that voting in favor of the proposal would not help strengthen bilateral ties, Thiepint said.  Any move against the nation could be diplomatically detrimental, as Sri Lanka could move towards China.

  A total of 11 countries, including China and Pakistan, attended the UN meeting.  Opposing the proposal, Sri Lanka voted in favor.
