#New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Maitri Setu(Bridge) between India and Bangladesh, a bridge over the Feni River, via video conference on Tuesday (9 March 2021).

The opening of the bridge is a testament to the continued commitment of the Bangladeshi government to support our neighboring country India in strengthening connectivity in the region, particularly in northeast India, "Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said at the start of the Maitri Setu Bridge via Video conference.

The name "Maitri Setu"(Bridge) symbolizes the developing bilateral relations and friendly relations between India and Bangladesh, the PMO said. The development was sponsored by the National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. worth 133 rupees, said the prime minister's office.

A 1.9 km long bridge connects Sabroom in India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh. This will usher in a new chapter on human trafficking and the movement of people between India and Bangladesh, the PMO said.

This will help facilitate the movement of goods and passengers between the two countries, create new market opportunities for products from northeastern countries, and assist the smooth transportation of passengers to and from India and Bangladesh, the PMO said.

"Tripura, which has been knocked out of its strike culture for years, is now trying to simplify business. Where the industry will close, there is now room for new industry and investment," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

With this opening, Tripura will become the "gateway to the northeast" with access to the Chittagong port in Bangladesh, which is only 80 km from Sabroom. Prime Minister Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the construction of an integrated checkpoint in Sabroom.
