Afghanistan Reuters-  A flash flood north of the Afghan capital on Wednesday killed at least 70 people and destroyed hundreds of homes, officials said.

Tamim Azimi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Disaster Management, said in the early hours of the morning, floods swept through Kabul's border province of Parwan, washed away men, women and children, and destroyed 300 homes.

Azimi said rescuers searched the mud all day to retrieve the bodies.  He confirmed that 72 people had been killed and at least 90 injured.

According to a spokesman for the Ministry of Disaster Management, climate change is increasing the risk of flooding in the country.  According to a spokesman for the Ministry of Disaster Management, floods also hit eight northern provinces, killing two in Maidan Ward and two in Nangahar.

A spokesman for President Ashraf Ghani said on Twitter that his office had instructed the survivors to provide emergency disaster relief services and that the floods had caused severe financial losses.

War-torn residents are already facing a sinking economy due to the coronavirus epidemic, and violence continues despite the United States trying to negotiate peace between the Afghan government and the rebel Taliban.
