His decades-long political career as a diplomat has been marked by the establishment of relations with Iraq, the 1990 Gulf War, and the emergence of countries at the forefront of fuel oil production to solve regional problems.  Kuwait's ruler Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah died on Tuesday.  He was 91 years old.

The Middle East's veteran rulers, the Sheikhs, stood for diplomacy in resolving the bitter dispute between Qatar and other Arab nations, which is still significant today.

The success of the US-led war in Iraq was achieved by the Iraqi army in 2006 after a unanimous vote in parliament to oust its ailing ancestor Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah and he came to power in Kuwait in 2006.

As Kuwait's ruling emir, he acknowledged resolving various internal issues and debates, including the 2011 crude oil price hike, the Arab Spring protests, and the price of crude oil.

“He represents the older generation of Gulf leaders, who feel consideration and restraint, emphasizing the importance of personal relationships between fellow kings,” said Christine Dewan, a senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf State Institute in Washington.

"He did not suffer from the lack of respect and esteem shown by the younger princes in power today."  State television announced the Quran prayer and then death.

Sheikh Sabah is expected to be succeeded by his half-brother, Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah.
