Malaysia- Lawyers for relatives of those killed in the 2014 shooting down of a Malaysia Airlines plane ,over eastern Ukraine told judges on Monday that the families had also demand compensation in recognition of the injustice they had acknowledged, and told judges that Russian "misinformation" hurt their grief.

  Lawyer Arlette Skigans pleaded guilty to crimes involving genocide, including three Russians and a missing Ukrainian resident of MH17, and asked the Dutch judiciary to reopen the trial.

  The Boeing 777 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur killed 29 Australians, including 298 passengers and 29 crew, when the missile was fired from a pro-Russian rebel-held area on July 17, 2014.

 Ms Seasons, representing 450 relatives, called on the court to address the legal question of the family's right to claim compensation, saying the court should consider the plight of hundreds of loved ones who have lost loved ones.


  "It's about people who suffered a terrible loss six years ago and whose lives are still affected today."

  Lawyers said 76 people who were direct witnesses to the incident were sure to testify, they would have to make their case to the law, and 316 people would make direct claims for compensation.


  "Criminal justice is important to them because it will establish the truth of what happened on July 17, 2014. Who is responsible for this? They deserve no punishment," he said.  “In other words, it’s about justice, fairness, crime and punishment

  "It's not about money, it's about truth. That's what we want," he told the court.

  Prosecutors allege that the missile carrying Flight MH17 was taken from a Russian military base to Ukraine.  Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement.


  Mrs Shijans said the "obstruction and isolation" of the Russian authorities was exacerbating the plight of relatives of the dead.



 "We are talking about people of flesh and blood here. In addition to the grief they are facing because of the death of their loved one, they have been additionally hurt by Russia's attitude," he told the judges.

  After a lengthy international investigation, prosecutors last year indicted four suspects: Russian Igor Girkin, Sergei Dobinsky and Oleg Pulatov, as well as Ukrainian Leonid Kharchenko.  The trial is set to begin in March and is still in its infancy. With the exception of Pulatov, none of them appeared for the trial.

  Mrs Shijans said Dutch courts should have the right to claim compensation under Ukrainian law and that they should claim this fair justice for the damages.


  "If we want reasonable compensation to be reasonable and a true symbol of the defendant's own actions, then the compensation must reflect the importance of the crime and the importance and reflection of the consequences for the relatives," he said.

 

  Following Monday's hearing, Presiding Judge Hendrik Steinheus adjourned the hearing until September 28.
