 A man is shot and killed by police during a traffic jam in Minneapolis on Wednesday, December 30. The incident occurred several blocks from the site where African American George Floyd was killed by a former police officer in Minneapolis in early May. The identity of the man and the situation surrounding the shooting were unclear, but police quoted witnesses as saying that the man fired first.

   

Protests erupted in the city after the shooting as more details await. The accident occurred in front of the Holiday gas station near East 36th Street and Cedar Avenue.

Police chief Medaria Ararandondo said officers had already recalled crime suspects, according to CBS. Arradondo also said that, from the initial statement, the suspect first shot the police, then shot and killed him.

The female passengers and police officers were not injured. CBS also said investigators at the scene found the suspect's weapon. Arradondo said police camera footage of the shooting would be released the following day. An investigation is being carried out by the Minnesota Criminal Arrest Bureau.

Following the shooting, Mayor Jacob Frey issued a statement: "Last year's events have been some of the darkest days in our city. We know life has been shortened and trust between skin color and law enforcement is fragile. Restoring trust."
