An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck near Loyal Island and caused a tsunami, Australia's weather agency said on Thursday.
"TSUNAMI CONFIRMED," wrote the Australian Meteorological Office on Twitter, warning of a threat to Lord Howe Island, some 550 kilometers east of mainland Australia.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake hit the South Pacific and caused tsunami warnings for New Zealand, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and other countries in the region.
The quake, which was amplified by the previous scale of 7.2, was followed by at least three more earthquakes in the region with a magnitude of 5.7 to 6.1 over a period of more than an hour.
The US tsunami warning system says the tsunami clock lights up in American Samoa and other regions, including Vanuatu, Fiji and New Zealand, have tsunami potential.
On some beaches of Vanuatu, Fiji and New Zealand there can be waves as high as 1 meter above normal tide levels.
