A team of experts sent to Wuhan, China to investigate the origin of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) found some signs of a much wider outbreak in December 2019 than previously reported. In an interview with CNN, World Health Organization (WHO) expert Peter Ben Embarek said investigators were seeking access to hundreds of thousands of blood samples from Chinese cities that Beijing was not allowed to test.

According to Embarek, the team also found more than a dozen types of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus had been circulating in December.

"The virus was widespread in Wuhan in December, which is a new discovery," the head of the WHO-led team was quoted as saying by US media.

In December 2019, the UN Health Department received media reports about many cases of pneumonia of unknown cause in Wuhan, China. The outbreak was later identified as a new coronavirus, and China shared its genetic sequence with the WHO in early January. However, many scientists studying the origins of Covid-19 have suspected that the virus spread to China long before its official reports.

Chinese scientists presented 174 cases of Covid-19, which were found in and around Wuhan in December 2019, to the visiting WHO team. WHO food safety experts say the figures show that the virus could infect more than 1,000 people in Wuhan this month, "15% ended up in severe cases" found by Chinese doctors, but "the majority are". Mild case ".

During the interview, Embarek noted that extending the nature of the genetic samples from the original Covid-19 cases allowed them to examine partial genetic samples, not just complete samples.

He said scientists had collected 13 different SARS-CoV-2 genetic sequences in December 2019 that could provide significant clues about the origin and extent of the outbreak if they could study them together with broader patient data from 2019.

"Some of them are from the market ... some are unrelated to the market," said the CNN expert.

More than 108 million cases of Covid-19 and nearly 2.4 million deaths have been reported worldwide, according to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. The United States remains the hardest-hit country, with more than 27 million reported coronavirus cases and more than 484,000 deaths.
