MOSCOW: External Affairs Minister S Jayashankar is scheduled to hold a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Moscow on Thursday evening at a time when border disputes are at an all-time high. This important meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will be held in the Russian capital.
The meeting, which began at 6pm, is set to take place against the backdrop of the ongoing stalemate along the Line of Actual Control in East Ladakh. Although there are many flashpoints in the LAC where the conflict started from the beginning of May, it is the north and south shores of Pangong Tso (lake) where the situation has become more heated over the past few days.
In the latest image, Chinese troops fired into the air as they tried to enter Indian positions at strategic altitudes along the LAC on the south shore of Pangong Lake. The incident erupted on Monday night and the Indian military said on Tuesday that the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) army was "relentlessly violating the agreement and continuing its offensive tactics."
The military said in a statement that PLA troops "were trying to confront us along the LAC and when evacuated by their own troops, People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops fired a few rounds into the air in an attempt to intimidate."
On the night between August 29 and 30, the PLA sought to control several illegal strategic elevations near the south shore of Lake Pangong following a bid by the PLA to change its position. The Indian army recently surprised the Chinese.
The meeting between Jayashankar and Wang became even more important as tensions erupted at the same time, bringing both countries to the brink of military conflict. The severity of the situation can be judged by the fact that for the first time in almost 45 years there was a shooting at the LAC.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who was in Moscow earlier this week for a meeting of SCO defense ministers, also sat down with his Chinese counterpart General Wei Feng. It was the highest level of face-to-face connection between India and China after border tensions heated up.
Both sides will take a firm stand during the meeting of the defense ministers and that is why all eyes are on today's meeting between Jaishankar and Wang.
