 Chandigarh: Fighting against terrorism in Punjab, he won the Shaurya Chakra award. Balwinder Singh Sandhu, the man who won the medal of honor, was shot dead by an unidentified assailant in Tarn Taran district on Friday. The government had given him security a month ago.

  Sandhu, 62, was shot four times by motorcyclists, police said.  , He was in the office adjacent to his weekend home at the time, he tried to escape.  Police said.  Doctors pronounced him "dead" when he was taken to hospital.

  Sandhu continued to fight terrorism in the state for many years, with the fight against Khalistani militancy facing at least 16 terrorist attacks.  His brother Ranjit said the state government had withdrawn the lion's protection a year ago.
