ISLAMABAD: An international bill has been approved by a Pakistani parliamentary panel to comply with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) directive and a reconsideration petition seeking the conviction of death row inmate Kulbhushan Yadav, a media report said on Thursday.
Ignoring the strong resistance of the opposition, the draft bill titled "International Court of Justice (Review and Reconsideration) Ordinance" was discussed and approved by the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Law and Justice on Wednesday.
Participating in the debate, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Farooq Nasim said the bill was declared in line with the directives of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
He said that if the bill was not passed in Parliament, Pakistan could face heavy sanctions if it did not comply with the ISJ's verdict.
In May 2017, Kulbhushan Yadav, a 50-year-old retired Indian Navy officer, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and terrorism.
In 2019, India appealed to the ICJ against Pakistan for denying Yadav consular access and challenging the death sentence before a military court.
In July 2019, the Hague-ICJ ruled that Pakistan should conduct an "effective review and reconsideration" of Kulbhushan jadav's conviction and sentence and offered to grant consular access to India without further delay.
Meanwhile, committee members from the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JI-F) opposed the bill, urging its chairman Riaz Fatiana to reject the bill, Pakistan Published in the media Dawn
