#BREAKING: An Indonesian Boeing 737 passenger plane has crashed in waters off Jakarta, the country’s capital, with over 50 people on board.

The plane is not a 737 Max, the embattled Boeing model involved in two crashes since late 2018.

Kompas TV quoted local fishermen as saying they had found debris near the islands off the coast of Jakarta, but could not immediately confirm that they were part of the missing jet.

Indonesia's Transportation Ministry said it was investigating the incident.

"A Sriwijaya (Air) plane from Jakarta to Pontianak (on the island of Borneo) with callsign SJY182 lost contact," said ministry spokesman Adita Iravati.

"Last contact is at 14:40 (0740 GMT)."

The low-cost carrier, which has about 19 Boeing planes flying to destinations in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, said it was only investigating the loss of contact.

The Indonesian SAR Agency and the National Road Safety Commission are also investigating, Iravati said.

In October 2018, 189 people died when the Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX reached the Java Sea on a routine flight one hour about 12 minutes after taking off from Jakarta.

In the crash - and the subsequent fatal flight to Ethiopia - Boeing was fined US $ 2.5 billion for allegedly defrauding regulators controlling the 737 MAX, which was built around the world after the two fatal crashes.
