Police in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, last week filed a case against Google chief executive Sundar Pichai and 17 others for defaming Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a video, but the technicians' names were later removed from the FIR, police officials said.
The names of Pichai and three other top Google officials have been deleted after their involvement in the case was not found, a police official told PTI over phone.
The FIR was lodged following a complaint by a local resident who claimed that the video had been viewed on a WhatsApp group and later on YouTube. He received more than 8,500 threatening calls on his mobile phone when he objected to the video, which was viewed by more than five million people, officials said.
Apart from the US-based Pichai, three other Google India officials, including Sanjay Kumar Gupta, have been named in the FIR.
The others in the FIR are Gazipur district-based musicians who make videos, a recording studio and a local music label company.
The FIR has been filed under sections 504 of the Indian Penal Code (intentional insult for violating peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 500 (defamation), 120B (party to criminal conspiracy).
Complaints under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act (disclosure or transmission of obscene material) are also leveled against the accused.
"The names of the Google officials were removed from the FIR on the same day," said a local police official, adding that they were not involved in the case.
