Interpol, founded in 1923, is an organization that coordinates policing activities for its 194 member countries.

One country may use a "red notice" to make an arrest warrant against another.

Trump ordered Solaimani, who was visiting Iraq, to be killed in a rocket attack by US forces near Baghdad airport on January 3, 2020.

Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes, Iraq's most influential militia leader, and Hashad al-Shabi, the deputy head of Iraq's militia, were also killed.

Solaimani was the commander of the elite Quds Force, part of an elite unit of the Iranian armed forces.

He also carried out pro-Iranian militias in Iraq and other countries.

President Hassan Rouhani hailed Solaimani as a national hero and he has become a memorable figure in the region since his assassination by the United States.

Rouhani said Tehran would retaliate "appropriately" for his killing and at the same time take legal action against Trump and the Pentagon.  (DPA / NAN)
