"Brazil is broken, boss, there is nothing I can do," the former army officer said in front of supporters at his reception in front of his official residence in the capital, Bolsonaro.

“I wanted to fix the tax reduction table, but we had a press-fuel virus there, the press without any character,” Bolsonaro said.

He spoke in support of the US Alliance for Democracy, but said that maintaining some independence was important for the United States. He spoke in support of the US Alliance, but said that maintaining some independence was not the answer.

Bolsonaro has been criticized for ignoring the risks of the coronavirus.  And he is now facing questions due to delays in Brazil’s vaccine rollout.

Although COVID-19 has killed nearly 200,000 Brazilians, the national immunization program is still three weeks late, although inoculation has already been introduced in regional counterparts Chile, Mexico and Argentina.

Despite the rising death toll in his country, Bolsonaro has boosted his popularity by announcing that nearly one-third of the public will provide emergency assistance to Brazilians for nine months.

But these payments ended this month amid pressure from markets concerned about the country's high deficit and debt levels.

Marcelo Neri, director of the Center for Social Policy of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), warned that Brazil could be "on the brink of a social catastrophe".

Andre Perefito of investment group Necton said, "No matter how strong the president's words are, I see it as a bad argument to prepare politically for spending cuts on an urgent basis and to try to balance public spending."

"The situation is serious," Perifito said, noting that "the central problem is not a lack of funds, but a lack of a clear plan" in a country where there is still no specific date for vaccination of Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the number of new infections and deaths is increasing.

In the last 24 hours, 1,771 South American giants have died and about 60,000 new cases have been reported, according to health officials, with the huge gathering that took place over the Christmas and New Year holidays, which could lead to an increase in infections.

Brazil’s economy will grow 3 percent in 2021 and will shrink next year, the World Bank said on Tuesday, adding that stimulus is declining.  And the country is constantly struggling to recover the output lost in the epidemic.

The World Bank’s forecast for Brazil’s 2021 gross domestic product (GDP) is 0.8 percentage points higher than its June estimate, but a 4.5 percent decline in 2020 is probably not enough, among the world’s worst covid-19 deaths outside the United States.
